Lead Development Engineer

Basingstoke - £45,000 - £55,000


Our client is an established engineering business that supplies high precision products into a variety of engineering markets such as aerospace and industrial engineering.


The Lead Development Engineer will provide an influential role in the development of new products, modifications and enhancements to existing products and process improvements for a world leading precision instrument manufacturer. The engineer will see product development through the whole life cycle and will be involved in new products development as well as legacy product support.

Accountabilities:

Accountable to the General Manager:

  • OTD of projects under his or her control against customer expectations and business promise
  • Compliance with the agreed specification(s) and statutory and regulatory requirements
  • R&D development cost control

Responsibilities

  • Generation of requirements specifications for new or customer requested product development
  • Significant contribution to the design of new products including DFM
  • Ensuring and evidencing product compliance to requirements
  • Ensuring that projects and designs follow good engineering practice
  • Compliance with the company’s procedures under ISO9001 and AS9100
  • Production of the relevant documentation to ensure build meets design requirements
  • Keeping abreast of technological advancements as relevant to the business
  • Technical support to the sales team

Measures of Success:

  • OTD of projects
  • Compliance with requirements
  • Development cost control
  • Responsiveness to production line stop requests
  • Ease of product manufacture


Desired Skills and Competencies:

  • A degree or equivalent in engineering, science or mathematics
  • The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years proven experience in a design engineering role
  • Good all-round working knowledge of electronics, electromechanical design, and firmware with a specialisation in at least one of these
  • Knowledge of sensors and sensing technology
  • Hands on approach
  • Self-management and strong organisational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong IT skills, especially MS Office applications.
  • Highly numerate with good analytical skills.
  • Ability to grasp concepts quickly and think beyond traditional methods to promote continuous improvement
  • Problem solving and implementing improved processes.
  • Lean manufacturing methods such as Kanban, JIT, 7 wastes and 5S.
  • Knowledge of Quality Management Systems, ideally AS9100.
  • There is no requirement for line management of others although this may become a development path
