Our client is a small but highly specialised UK manufacturer — in fact, the only one of their kind — making bespoke, high-value capital equipment for heavy-duty industries like oil & gas, marine and construction. We’re talking serious engineering: powerful kit with impressive capacity.
They’re now looking for a Business Development Manager to join the team. The outgoing MD (still actively selling) is retiring, and the Sales Manager is stepping up — creating a business-critical sales vacancy that needs someone sharp, driven, and proactive.
You’ll be based at their West Sussex site (non-negotiable), with regular UK travel and international trips once you’re settled in.
Building relationships with new and existing customers — mostly B2B, capital equipment
Digging into a database of 2,000+ qualified contacts and unearthing new leads
Driving targeted outbound activity (not boiler-room telesales)
Getting out on the road for site visits, demos, and face-to-face meetings
Supporting a global dealer and distributor network
Representing the business at exhibitions and industry events
Working closely with the Sales Manager and leadership team
Travelling overseas 1–2 times per month (typically one week at a time), once up to speed
A strong sales background — ideally in industrial capital equipment or similar technical products
Commercially sharp and confident talking shop with engineers
A proven track record in new business, not just account management
Comfortable with long sales cycles and high-value consultative selling
Self-motivated and proactive — you won’t be handed warm leads every day
Willing and able to travel (UK and internationally)
Bonus points for international experience or working with distributors, but not essential
This is a well-established engineering business with exports to over 50 countries. They’re small (fewer than 20 people) but very specialist — designing and building everything on-site in West Sussex.
You’d be working in an open-plan office alongside sales, marketing, and leadership — no silos, no red tape. Visitors are often surprised by the scale and complexity of what they do.
£45k base salary
1% commission on all sales over £500k (realistic OTE £50k+ in year one, more beyond)

25 days’ holiday + bank holidays

Full-time: Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm (30-minute lunch break)
3-month trial period
